CANCER AND PREVENTION
Cancers(malignant tumor) are a large family of diseases which involve abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body(metastasis). They form a subset of neoplasms.
A neoplasm or tumor is a group of cells that have undergone unregulated growth, and will often form a mass or lump, but may be distributed diffusely.
Tobacco use is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths. Another 10% is due to obesity, a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and drinking alcohol. Other factors include certain infections include, exposure to ionizing radiation, and environmental pollutants. In the developing world nearly 20% of cancers are due to infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human papillomavirus. These factors act, at least partly, by changing the genes of a cell. Typically many such genetic changes are required before cancer develops. Approximately 5–10% of cancers are due to genetic defects inherited from a person's parents. Cancer can be detected by certain signs and symptoms or screening tests. It is then typically further investigated by medical imaging and confirmed by biopsy.
How can you prevent yourself from having cancer?
1. By not smoking
2.Maintaining a healthy weight
3. By not drinking too much alcohol
4. By Eleating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains,
5. Aeing vaccinated against certain infectious diseases, not eating too much red meat.
6. Avoiding too much exposure to sunlight.( can lead to skin cancer)
Classification of cancer
1. Carcinoma: Cancers derived from epithelial cells. This group includes many of the most common cancers, particularly in the aged, and include nearly all those developing in the breast, prostate, lung, pancreas, and colon.
2. Sarcoma: Cancers arising from connective tissue (i.e. bone, cartilage, fat, nerve), each of which develop from cells originating in mesenchymal cells outside the bone marrow.
3. Lymphoma and leukemia: These two classes of cancer arise from hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells that leave the marrow and tend to mature in the lymph nodes and blood, respectively. Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children accounting for about 30%.
4. Germ cell tumor: Cancers derived from pluripotent cells, most often presenting in the testicle or the ovary.
5. Blastoma: Cancers derived from immature "precursor" cells or embryonic tissue. Blastomas are more common in children than in older adults.
Prevention and cure
There is no cure to cancer even by surgery but some drugs can be taken to prevent the at least 8 percent of people from death of cancer.
- These doesn't mean that this drugs can work for everyone one..but for some people to prevent cancer death.
- Generally, NSAIDs( non steroidal anti - inflammatory drugs) e.g Aspirin reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, however due to the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal effect they cause overall harm when used.
- surgery can also be done, but why I said it can't be cured by surgery earlier on is because after incision( cutting of) of that particular part of the malignant tumor, there is 80% probability that it will still grow back.
.this is because cancer have the ability to metastasize( that is can spread to the next tissue of cell) so there for abstinence is better that risk.
- if you are feeling any lumps or a stone-like pain in any part of your body, visit the doctor for early diagnosis before metastasis start to take place and there forleads to death
